Introduction of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU)

The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in May 1974 as the world’s second open university and the first in Asia and Africa. Initially referred to as the People’s Open University, it was renamed Allama Iqbal Open University on the eve of the national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s 100th birthday in 1977.

The idea of an “open university” was presented with the enunciation of broad principles in the Education Policy of 1972-80, in these words:

“Open universities are being used in several countries to provide education and training to people who cannot leave their homes and jobs for full-time studies. An open university will, therefore, be established to provide part-time educational facilities through correspondence courses, tutorials, seminars, workshops, laboratories, television and radio broadcasts, and other mass communication media….”

The concept of distance education assumed greater relevance and acceptance in Pakistan due to the factors of poverty and relative deprivation of women. The uptake of formal education in rural areas is also relatively low in rural parts of Pakistan, and literacy levels for females, particularly in the rural areas, are also lower than in other areas. Many conservative parents do not allow their daughters to go out to school, and the AIOU, through its system of distance education, has provided educational opportunities to these girls and women.

More recently, the AIOU hopes to fulfill another urgent national need, providing more affordable professional and technical education. This has become costly in Pakistan, especially in recent years, because of the government policy encouraging the private sector in this sector. As a result, many middle- and working-class people have little chance of gaining access to training and education in fields such as business administration, computer science, medicine, and engineering. The AIOU is attempting to meet this challenge by keeping fees to a minimum and by creating a Student Assistance Fund.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE:

Fresh International/Overseas Students: 

1. The online admission form is available on the Website.
2. Click on the online admission form.
3. Create your profile by using your email ID; don’t use your mobile number for the creation of your profile. 
4. Complete Admission Form 
5. Select your required program 
6. Upload the required documents 
7. Submit your application 
8. Click on the fee payment link 
9. Download the fee payment challan and note down your challan number
10. Click on this.
11. Enter the challan number and click on the “search” button 
12. Check & tally your challan details with the generated challan, then click on the “submit fee” button 
13. Enter the credit/debit card number, cardholder name, expiry, and CVV code (mentioned on the back side of the card). 
14. Click on the “pay now” button 
15. A successful payment notification will have appeared with an Order ID 
16. Write the order ID and transaction date in the given space. 
17. Save the Order ID in your record till confirmation of your admission 
18. You will get an email for confirmation of your admission.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FILL UP ONLINE APPLICATION FORMS

Here we will share/guide you on how to fill up the online admission form: • First, open our website in any browser. You will be on this page/window. 

• Click Online Admission Forms under the ADMISSIONS Tab.

• On the next window you will find the above six options.

On clicking Application For New Admission, you can view the window as shown in the picture. Here you will have to create your account with your email (The phone number option is not available for international and overseas students). • Please click on Create Account.

On creating an account with email, you will receive a code through your email. Write down that code on this page and proceed further. • On successful creation of your account with AIOU, you will have to sign in with your email and password as per the shown example:

After clicking the login button, you will sign into your university account. 

• Click on Apply for New Program. You will see two options: Face-to-Face Programs and Open Distance Learning Programs.

• Click Open Distance Learning Program.

On Next Window, you will find an option to choose your degree program in which you want to get admission. Select the option that is best for you.

• After selecting your desired degree program, you will be at a new window where you will have to fill up the required information.

• Start filling up the information on the next page, i.e., your last degree information. Under Degree Type, click Degree, and under Degree Level, click 12 years of education. Under DEGREE, click the relevant option. Then, in your preference/major, click a relevant option, and then, under board/university, select the university from which you passed your last degree. 

• After this, you will have to provide INFORMATION about your MARKS. Under Starting Year and Passing Year, select the year you started and passed your degree. 

• Under Roll Number, type your roll number or registration no. for that degree. 

• In exam type, annual or semester, and grading. 

• Then fill up the Total Marks and Obtained Marks. Then Division will be auto-filled by the system.

Click on the open on the right side.

• Click one by one on the given options  Program of Study, Personal Information, Academic Record, Professional Experience, Course Information, Photographs & Documents, and fill up accurately all the requisite information under these headings. 

• Applicants of BS (4 Years), Associate degree programs, B.E.D programs, online certificates, and postgraduate diplomas will pay their fees online after filling up their online admission form. 

• In Professional Experience, students who don’t have any work experience shall click as shown in the picture and click on the save & continue Section:

• Please upload all required documents in the requisite format in the Photograph & Documents Section:

• At the last step, ACCEPT ALL UNDERTAKINGS by clicking on the empty boxes placed on the left side of the window and clicking on the submit application button:
